India, for the first time will be the host to 8th International Theatre Olympics, a greatest carnival organised by National School of Drama in coordination with Union Culture Ministry. The event is from17th February - on 8th April,2018.

The 2018 Theatre Olympics is to showcase  over 500 plays and 700 ambience performances across the globe with the best of theatre productions .India has an opportunity to showcase its richness and diversity of its culture to the world in this International Event.

This international event was started in the year of 1993 in Greece. The other countries who have hosted it are Japan in 1999, Russia in 2001, Turkey in 2006, South Korea in 2010 and China in 2014. The 7th edition of this International Theatre Carnival was held in Poland in 2016.

This Theatre event is expected to host over 50 international and 150 Indian Theatre Groups over the span of two months.  Minister of Culture says that, Theatres can be used to address the social issues with awareness.

The Chairperson of NSD has announced the theme for the event as “Flag of Friendship” with an aim to reach a global level of friendship and compassion with theatre artists.  

The 8th Theatre Olympics will hoist the flag of Brotherhood and Friendship across the globe. Since India is hosting it for the first time  to showcase and exchange theatre with world, we would put the best foot forward said Waman Kendre, Director of NSD. When it comes to theatre, it doesn’t get any bigger than the Theatre Olympics. Hence NSD is all geared up to play the perfect host.

Along with the inauguration ceremony on 17th February, seminars, discussions, workshops, symposia and much more are listed. The event ends in Mumbai on 8th April with a gala function.
