Vivekananda Rock Memorial is a place of historical importance and is of great spiritual significance. This is one of the most popular places which is considered to be devotional and as an admirable framework. Vivekananda Rock Memorial was built in 1970 as a cenotaph to Swami Vivekananda. It is on one of the two adjacent rocks which is situated 500m east of mainland of Vavathurai, in Kanyakumari. The life-sized bronze Statue of Swami Vivekananda in his 'Parivrajak' posture is enchanting and one of the most attractive features of the memorial.

In 1892, before starting his philosophical journey, Swami Vivekananda was meant to have meditated on this rocky outthrust. And it is in this southern most tip of the country where he attained enlightenment. In this memorial we get to see the delightful and mellifluous blend of all the architectural beauty of the whole nation. It could also be stated as a symbol of unity because the entire nation contributed for its establishment. People and celebrities from all states and also from other countries participated in its inauguration. Many religious ,cultural and worldwide organisations provided it’s extreme support at the time of its inauguration.

The Vivekananda Rock Memorial comprises of  two important structures namely the Shripada Mandapam and the Vivekananda Mandapam. Shripada Mandapam is a square hall with various sections. They are named as Garbha Graham, Inner Prakaram, Outer Prakaram and Outer platform around the hall. Vivekananda Mandapam has similarities in structure to Shri Ramakrishna temple in Belur. The entrance of the Memorial has the architectural style of Ajanta and Ellora cave temples.

Vivekananda Mandapam also has various sections. It has a meditation hall with six rooms that are called as Dhyana Mandapam. There is a Sabha Mandapam where you can have the assembly halls with two rooms, corridor and a open courtyard. Along with it there is an area where the statue has been kept called as Pralima Mandapam. It also consists of the area where the front steps has two more rooms with a corridor which is called as Mukha Mandapam. The local legends of the place also state that this rock is blessed by Goddess Devi Kumari. Here on the rocks you can see the marks of the Goddess’s pious feet. Hence the rock is blessed in two ways.So the Memorial stands as a structural masterpiece which represents different kinds of architectural styles of India and also as a holy place to give tribute to this prominent spiritual teacher and patriotic monk of today’s India- Swami Vivekananda.

A Thiruvalluvar statue,or the Valluvar Statue, of 133feet (40.6) was built on the vivekananda rock and was unveiled on January1st, 2000.

It is to commemorate the great poet, philosopher and author of the ancient Tamil work THIRUKKURAL by him.It is a tall stone sculpture  sculpted by the Indian sculptor, Dr. V.Ganapati Sthapati.

The birthday of Swami Vivekananda is on January 12th and that of Thiruvalluvar on January 15th. This vivekananda rock has become a tourist attraction with two great memorials in one place which makes their birthdays  memorable.
