At 81 years of age, Girish Karnad left us, leaving behind decades of theatre, cinema and literature to celebrate forever. In addition to being a writer, he was also a theatre and film actor, filmmaker and screenplay writer and equally good and popular at all of them.

His most read works include "Yayati," "Hayavadana," and "Tuglaq." He wrote these plays in Kannada and translated them into English himself. He was a Padma Bhushan and Jnanapith awardee. He had also worked at various prestigious institutions like the Oxford University Press, the Sangeet Natak Academy, Nehru Centre, the Indian High Commission in London and so on.

Girish Karnad had a sweet Chennai connection through the theatre group "The Madras Players," where he worked as an actor as well as a director. The group has staged some of his plays as well.

Incidentally, on 10th June, when Karnad bid farewell to life, we also lost another gem in the theatre and cinema fields. Crazy Mohan, who is every Tamil film lover's favourite, passed away at the age of 67. He shined as an actor, comedian, screenwriter and playwright. He had also run his own drama troupe called "Crazy Creations." He is most famous for witty films like "Michael Madana Kamarajan," "Magalir Mattum," "Arunachalam," "Aboorva Sagotharargal" etc. One just cannot think of these films without breaking into laughter. For the ever increasing fans of literature, theatre and film, Karnad and Crazy Mohan are at the two ends of a spectrum in terms of the genre they wrote in, but are and will always be, equally dear to their hearts.
