On the 8th of December 2019 the production, ‘What She Said – Voices from the Ramayana’ directed by Mrs Gowri Ramnarayan was staged at Kalakshetra’s Rukmani Arangam. The production is actually a series of monologues as spoken by 6 very important female characters, who though play a very crucial part, have been side-lined and not given their rightful respect and attention through the epic. The Director, through this play, has made us realise that Rama, Lakshmana and Sita are not the only main characters of the play. The Director very cleverly and with great subtilty has tried to bring out the injustice met out to these characters throughout the epic. The characters that were brought to life were, Urmila (Lakshmana’s wife), Manthara(the hunchback, Kaikeyi’s servant), Shurpanakha(Ravana’s Sister), Mandodhari(Ravana’s wife), Tara(the Monkey King Vaali’s wife) and Shanta(the daughter and the first born of King Dasharatha). All the characters spoke about the trials and tribulations that they went through in the course of their lives. The production was inspiring and thought provoking too.
