“An Actor prepares” written by Constantin Stanislavski. This is my understanding from the book which is about method acting. This book is meant for all as it talks abut how various emotions and feelings originate in the mind and how we as humans are expressing and reacting to such feelings. The author believes that all human beings are actors irrespective of our profession whether we are office professionals, students, scholars or even homemakers we are all actors and this world is a stage. Though this book teaches about how an actor should prepare, how a Director should choreograph a scene and so on it does not instruct or gives rules to be followed. The author has written it like a novel. He introduces a chracter in the beggining and it is about the process by which the character understands acting. So simple right?
Let's get to know Stanislavsky. Konstantin Stanislavsky was a Russian actor, producer, director, and founder of the Moscow Art Theatre. As a theatre practitioner, he worked with lot of famous writers like Anton Chekhov, Maxim Gorky, and Mikhail Bulgakov. This book tells about one such incident between Anton chekov and Stanislavasky. Anton Chekov is also a Russian playwright and short story writer. He wanted to direct his plays and did so, but the plays didnt fare well with the audience so he seeked Stanislavsky's help and asked him to direct his plays. With Stanislavski directing the plays, Anton's writing recieved the recognition it deserved and the play too made a deep impact on the audience. Stanislavskyte tells us how he was able to do this magic with his techniques in this book.
This book is not just about acting but it also talks about how every human being requires a certain amount of Discipline. At the very begginning the book states "The actor, no less than the soldier, must be subject to iron discipline.” According to it an actor is the equivalent and that is explained through the various training methods the character wanting to learn acting is put through.
Overall this book is a great source of knowledge for any person who wants to understand what acting is and what kind of discipline is required to be an actor both in life and on stage.
