When you think of great universities, your mind will probably travel to Oxford or Cambridge, right? But do you know that one of the first and greatest universities in the world is located in India? It is the Nalanda University which is located in Bihar. Also a Buddhist monastery, its history starts from the time of Buddha, around 6-5 B.C and is believed to have been flourished in the Gupta period, which is known as the Golden Era of Indian history. The university held around 10,000 students and 2000 teachers. It attracted students and scholars from China, Greece, Persia, Japan, Korea, Mongolia, Sri Lanka etc. The students studied Indian and foreign philosophies, Hindu and Buddhist sacred texts, secular texts like science, astronomy, medicine, logic, yoga-shastra, sankhya etc. The residential university was unfortunately destroyed by a number of attacks from foreign invaders. Interestingly, in 2006, 800 years after its destruction, the then President of India Dr. A.P.J Abdul Kalam proposed the revival of the university and since then the Government of India as well as that of other nations like Singapore have been working towards the fulfilment of the goal.
